History of the PBGS: Prologue
This project was conceived when the 1986-1987 combined directory of the WTGS-PBGS-SPWLA-SEPM was published and the historical record of the Geophysical Society was no longer part of the publication. It was also noted that the 1983-1984 Directory contained only brief comments on the Society and did not extend past the year 1981. The idea was further nurtured while I was in the process of sorting and arranging the society files in 1987. I was encouraged by some of the “older” members of the group, even some of the founding members, and so the narrative was developed.
There are bound to be some who will disagree with the relative importance or accuracy of some of the things I list, but this work is designed to be flexible so that anyone who has pertinent data with dates and places intact can submit them for inclusion into the narrative. This history is intended for the sole use of the Geophysical Society membership and there is no intent for commercial use or gain. The narrative may be expanded, modified or changed at the discretion of the Society membership. Any reproduction of the narrative should have the permission of the current Executive Committee of the Society.
