Permian Basin Geophysical Society

History of the PBGS: 2003-2004

OFFICERS:

PRESIDENT: Peter Morton (Vector Seismic)
PRES. ELECT: Cynthia Black (Digital Prospectors)
VICE PRES.: Sammy Barnhill (Dawson Geophysical Co.)
SECRETARY: Ron Keas (Conoco-Phillips)
TREASURER: Joe Caputo (EOG Resources)

For the first time we held our Annual Meeting (45th) in September in conjunction with the Doodlebug Open. It’s theme was “Catching a New Wave on an Old Shore”. The Permian Basin and its workers just keep re-inventing themselves. Mike Bahorich, SEG President, gave the keynote address on “The Road Ahead in 3-D Seismic”. The event took place at the Petroleum Club in downtown Midland and included 8 papers plus the keynote. Topics covered CO2 monitoring, AVO impedance, multi-component seismic data using vectorseis sensors, wide azimuth long offset values of 3-D, and a review of the Scale-Frequency Symposium held in Oklahoma. The meeting was packed up to the end as our past President Glenn Winters and Bruce Karr presented back-to-back talks on Converted Wave Processing and its potential to unlock lithology interpretation secrets in parts of the Basin.

Feedback from members made it clear that they did not like the change, and the Board decided to move the Annual Meeting back to the Spring. Attendance did not improve, but did not falter either. For the past 5-8 years Annual Meeting attendance has hovered at near 75 people, a marked drop from earlier years. Given time frames and the Board being short-handed, the decision was made to postpone the technical Exploration Meeting until Spring of 2005. The Annual Business Meeting was held at the VFW building in May during the membership BBQ. Let’s hope attendance problems are a thing of the past as product prices continue to climb and employment opportunities abound!

Fall luncheon papers seemed to be a natural follow-up to the Annual Meeting by again covering many of the same topics including imaging lithology changes with 9-C component data.

The PBGS officers were really stretched thin this year with President, Past-Pres., and Secretary transferred to Houston. Cynthia acted as President and President-Elect. Sammy Barnhill seemed to be everywhere at once. Joe Caputo did the best he could given the devestating stroke suffered by his wife and the death of his mother-in-law not long afterwards. Our Society owes a debt of gratitude to Debbie Lawrence who filled in as Secretary and made many positive suggestions to improve our membership update process, as well as performing many of the Treasurer’s tasks. Martha George of Western-Geco continued in her invaluable role of coordinating the Annual Distinguished Instructor Short Course (DISC) as well as taking on many other tasks. Georgia Briscoe (Pinnacle Seismic) did an outstanding job of revamping and updating our web page. It looks great now!

Spring papers covered CO2 flood monitoring at Weyburn Field, Canada, converted shear wave anisotropy attributes for fractured reservoirs and earth model complexity and risk.

Debbie Lawrence gave a report on membership – along with a plea for address change notices (e-mail accepted) – and noted that we have 397 members with 224 living in Midland and 173 out - of – towners. She also noted that in any given month 6 to 10 members move or change jobs, not counting those who update e-mail service but forget to provide the new address to PBGS. Computers have changed our world – some for the better and some for the worse – but all of it more complex and only made “easy” if you stay on top of things.

A DISC course scheduled for May was postponed until August because the author hadn’t had time to complete the book which normally accompanies the short course.
