We did it!! We all survived the Y2K predictions that all computers would fail when the date changed from '99 to '00. All went well and, even though the end of the millennium was still a year away, the worldwide celebrations for 2000 were awesome hope you watched them on TV.
But Im ahead of things along with Y2K we were advised by Dr. James Allen that 3-D processing techniques can produce radically different results. He gave examples and also noted that processing is more art than science. He made many pertinent recommendations on procedures to follow. It is also an interesting side note that in the era of the 1970s processing of seismic data normally 6 to 9 months were requred to process a 10 square mile survey. Now we can handle 50 square miles in 4 to 6 weeks. It seems like this is similar to driving at higher speed on a washboard road, the ride seems smoother but you know the ruts (and pitfalls) are still there.
The year started with a change of Board members. Brian Pluemer had been elected Secretary in April 1999, winning over Cynthia Black by one vote. Brian was transferred to Denver in September of 1999 and Debra Lackey called Cynthia to see if she would like to fill the Secretarys shoes who said a loser cant win!
PBGS worked with others during Earth Science Week in the schools and also promoted educational opportunities available at the PB Graduate Center. In December, Russ Opfer gave a talk on using high resolution gravity data to provide accurate static corrections for seismic data. Hal Pardue was again nominated for the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the SEG.
Then, finally, we started off the New Year with a new concept High Fidelity Vibratory Seismic (HFVS) presented by Nick Moldoveanu with Schlumberger. The method involved measurement and recording of the vibrator motion for each individual vibrator with the ability to separate the signals afterward. Examples from West Texas were shown.
A DISC program was presented by Robert J. Garotta on Shear Waves from Acquisition to Interpretation and was held in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Meeting whose theme was In Search of the Reservoir. A good blend of topics. SEG President Bill Barkhouse gave the keynote address and eight technical papers followed.
