Permian Basin Geophysical Society

History of the PBGS: 1998-99

OFFICERS:

PRESIDENT: Brad Birkelo (Independent Consultant)
PRES. ELECT: Debra Lackey (Western Geophysical Co.)
VICE PRES.: Mike Party (Wagner & Brown Ltd.)
SECRETARY: Frank Brown (Dawson Geophysical Co.)
TREASURER: Peter Lellis (Conoco, Inc.)

The Presidents’ (Brad) opening letter in the PBGS Newsletter noted, among other things, the need for more volunteers to fill society offices and the challenge to look for new opportunities to serve the geoscience community – perhaps in conjunction with the WTGS, SEPM and SPE. Cross-disciplinary skills are needed by geophysicists for communication improvement.

Fall meetings brought us info on seismic attributes, rock physics in the real world, facies analysis in the Ft. Worth Basin and a 3-D case history from Kern Co., California.

The annual golf tournament had 198 participants and the skeet shoot set a record with 155 shooters. We also started having one page company ad inserts to help defray the cost of publishing the Newsletter. There was also a plan to start using e-mail to notify members of scheduled events.

In the Spring we had a Distinguished Instructor Short Course (DISC) with Martha George as coordinator. SEG requirements for adequate registration are strict and member participation is encouraged. Dr. Phillip Schultz spoke on velocity models as an interpretation asset.

The 41st Annual Meeting was held at the Midland Hilton with keynote address by SEG President Brian Russell. Steve Roche, who has been a regular contributor, gave a paper on “Simultaneous Acquisition of 3-D Surface Seismic Data and 3-C, 3-D VSP Data”. Other papers dealt with inversion, coherence cube volumes, 4-D, porosity mapping, signal deconvolution and a presentation on upper Paleozoic thrust reservoirs in the Val Verde Basin. A new twist was added to the Annual Meeting by allowing exhibitors to set up booths outside the technical presentations.

The Presidents’ call for participation apparently had an effect since 7 people vied for 4 positions for next year (1999-2000).
