Permian Basin Geophysical Society

History of the PBGS: 1996-97

OFFICERS:

PRESIDENT: Ray Tobias (Dawson Geophysical Co.)
PRES. ELECT: Jasha Cultreri (Independent Geophysicist)
VICE PRES.: Brad Birkelo (Digital Prospectors)
SECRETARY: Michael Party (Wagner & Brown Ltd.)
TREASURER: Debra Lackey (Western Geophysical Co.)

Observing the list of officers you will see that we have now changed Second Vice President to Vice President to put us in line with the format used by SEG. President-Elect is still the only “given” for advancement.

The year started early with an August meeting with SEG Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Fred J. Barr. His talk was a sort of compilation of papers we have heard recently from other authors and covered such topics as the value of 3-D in prospecting, cost of 3-D, side effects of varying field parameters, environmental concerns, shear wave acquisition and 4-D surveys for reservoirs. A good review for anyone who missed papers at our regular and Annual meetings.

Mike Party once again organized the Doodlebug Open. We heard more on Lithseis – Lithology from seismic data by Rick Wallace and “Acquisition parameter selection and relation to data processing” by Stewart Wright later in the fall and winter.

Spring of ’97 brought us a case history report by J. Edward Blott (co-authored by Tom Davis and Robert D. Benson) of CSM on a 3-D, 3-C survey of Morrow valley fill sandstone reservoirs in SE Colorado. Reservoir delineation was shown to be excellent.

PBGS started maintaining a web site located by accessing the SEG homepage and selecting sections. Brad Birkelo stated that the PBGS calendar, upcoming events and other web pages would be available.

The 39th Annual Meeting was held in the CEED building at highways 191 and 1788. Fred J. Hilterman, SEG President, opened the program and was followed by 8 prsesentations. A rather varied selection of topics covered 2-D, 3-D, 4-D studies, seismic attributes, PSM, fracture mapping from azimuthal velocity and lithostratigraphy.
