Once again our Fall “info series” included a Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. John P. Castagna on “Applied AVO Analysis: Use and Abuse of AVO”. I’m sure most of us were appalled to think that anyone would abuse a processing technique but Dr. Castagna made his points quite well. Some more “pitfalls” do exist.

The Doodlebug Open was its’ usual success, even in the rain, as was the on-going WTGS-PBGS Skeet Shoot.

One of our founders, C.W.Payne, passed away at the age of 80. He was a CSM graduate, successful geophysicist and entrepreneur and well known by most of us. We also lost Robert G. Reeves (75), a geologist, who served 20 years as a geophysicist/geologist with the USGS, taught at CSM and was Professor of Geology at UTEP.

In a forward looking direction ex-president Steve Jumper was nominated to the post of Secretary/Treasurer of the SEG. The Dawson people are apparently not afraid to volunteer their time.

In May we had a two day Continuing Education school on “A Practical Approach to Seismic Imaging of Complex Geology”. Seems like it’s always complex where oil and gas is concerned. Our 38th Annual Meeting again had a bunch of papers (10) and, after a lengthy hiatus, had a Midland mayor, Bobby Burns, welcome guests. Our SEG President was absent this year. A “unique” paper on airborne gravity and its practical application in West Texas was given by Mike Mueller, VP of marketing for Carson Services, Inc. Other papers followed the more usual routine and covered studies in the NW Midland Basin, NW shelf of New Mexico, the Val Verde basin, Matador Arch, and articles on processing and imaging. We had our first (I think) paper on 3-D coherence cube processing by Tony Rebec of Coherence Technology Co. but previously with Western and Halliburton.
