The recent collapse of the USSR and the resulting entry of US technology into the Soviet petroleum system was highlighted by one of our more widely traveling geophysicists – Ed Woodruff. Ed was doing consulting and training work in Russia and gave us a report on two contrasting company towns. One was reasonably up-to-date on production technology and the other was like a step back in time with primitive operations and inefficiencies. A very enlightening talk and Ed had some excellent pictures. He also discussed traveling, rooming and eating in Russia. Not all great but he does plan to go back.

Later in the year Steve Roche (ex-Pres.) gave a paper on cost reduction techniques in 3-D surveys trying to find adequate resolution at reasonable costs.

Our 35th Annual Meeting hosted 150 attendees who heard keynote speaker Marion Bone, SEG President, and eight additional papers again heavily oriented toward 3-D surveys. One unique paper was by ARCO on a survey in Alaska near a compressor station. A noise study designed to quantify this problem reduced the no-data zone from 3km to 200m around the station. Other excellent papers were presented. It should also be noted that 1993 marked the last year for the “Icebreaker Party” normally held the evening before the day of technical sessions. A general lack of support by attendees was cited as the reason by sponsors and coordinators of the event.
