This was certainly a notable year for the PBGS. Decker Dawson was installed as president of the SEG in the year of 1989 and in the spring of 1990 we hosted the 43rd Annual Midwest Meeting and Exposition of the SEG. Naturally Decker was a keynote speaker along with William L. Fisher with the Bureau of Economic Geology of the University of Texas. The meeting was held in the Midland Center in downtown Midland.
The Fall, 1989, program of an SEG Distinguished Lecturer was provided by Dr.William S. French who spoke on Practical Seismic Imaging. In his talk Dr. French made it clear that 3-D acquisition and improved processing techniques greatly improved our understanding of the subsurface but still left many questions unanswered. Much work still needed to be done and computer hardware developments would be a key factor. How right he was!
A 1989 survey of SEG Sections showed the PBGS with 414 total members of which only 65 were SEG members. We had three representatives to the SEG council.
The 43rd Annual Midwest Meeting was held March 25-27, 1990, with the theme Domestic Exploration and Exploitation A World-Class Window of Opportunity. John F. Faught was General Chairman. Registration fee was $70.00 which covered the two days and the icebreaker. A total of 48 papers were presented (including the two keynote speakers) and, as could be expected, covered a wide range of topics from case histories to acquisition methods, processing and reservoir analysis. There were two separate theaters used at the Midland Center so choices had to be made regarding which paper was of greater interest to the attendee. The whole program was quite successful and pretty well finalized a busy year for the PBGS.
