History of the PBGS: 1984-85

PRESIDENT: James V. Humphrey (Geodata Corp.)

These years were a time of Directory absence (Joint WTGS, PBGS, SEPM and SPWLA). The 1983 issue was the last one available and it would be 1986-87 before the next one would come out. All of the job changes, transfers (including losses) and mergers made the old Directory out of date and it was sometimes a challenge to track someone down. Consideration was given to putting out a PBGS Directory only, but talk of an “imminent” Joint Directory forestalled any action.

The Midland Energy Library (non-profit) was established mainly through the efforts of Hugh Frenzel (Geologist). The PBGS was to have one member on the Board of Directors. The idea was to provide technical data to Independent geologists, geophysicists, engineers and Independents.

SEG announced Petro Ex – an exposition designed to encourage technological cooperation with the People’s Republic of China. The SEG Midwestern geophysical Sections agreement was finalled regarding future sponsorship of future meetings. Midwest members are: Dallas, Denver, Oklahoma City, Permian Basin, San Antonio and Tulsa. The 1985 Midwestern Meeting was held in San Antonio. L. Decker Dawson was elected SEG Secretary-Treasurer.

PBGS hosted the 28th Annual Exploration Meeting on May 23, 1985, using the theme “Times Change.” “Red” Olander, SEG President, was keynote speaker and 7 technical papers were presented. Once again, Mayor Thane Akins welcomed guests.
