Five scholarships were awarded in 1982-83 totaling $5000 to students at Texas A&M, University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Michigan. However, the scholarship Committee recommended that future funds be given to the SEG for disbursement. Various problems in billing from the University Bursar's office and a lack of response from students prompted this action. During this same term an SEG slide program was presented on a special fund drive for the SEG Education Foundation.
The SEG transferred local Sections news from Geophysics to The Leading Edge magazine. The SEG Annual Meeting was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the well attended Midwestern Meeting was in Oklahoma City and netted the PBGS almost $9000. The Casper Geophysical Society applied for membership in the Midwest group.
SEG Distinguished Lecturer Nigel Anstey spoke to the Society on A Few Things Left To Do I guess there will always be a few things.
The 27th Annual Meeting was held at Midland Center on May 13, 1983, and used the theme 1983-Turning Point. E. R. Brumbaugh, SEG President, was keynote speaker and 8 technical papers were presented. Mayor Thane Akins again welcomed guests.
