ORIGINAL RECAP: “The 25th Annual Exploration Meeting was held on March 20, 1981. Mr. Kevin M. Barry, President of the SEG, was keynote speaker. The meeting was well attended. On April 8, 1981, Dr. George R. Pickett, a featured lecturer of the 1981 SEG Distinguished Lecture Program, spoke on “Integrated Exploration: Frustration, Fulfillment or Fun?”. Scholarships were awarded to five students in geophysics”.

In addition to the papers mentioned in the original recap, the Society members heard about electrical surveys in oil and gas exploration. Crew shortages, high permit costs and data processing delays and costs have encouraged another look at “other” techniques which are increasingly available.

These were the “peak” years – the SEG reported an international crew count of over 1250 in the fourth quarter of 1981 (744 U. S. crews in September, 1981). Little did anyone anticipate the dramatic and prolonged decline which would result in an international crew count of less than 500 (less than 160 U. S.) by the third quarter of 1986.

The PBGS membership on May 1, 1981, was 514.
