ORIGINAL RECAP: “The PBGS 24th Annual Exploration Meeting was held on March 7, 1980. The theme for the meeting was “Beginning a Time of Challenge”. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Milo. M. Backus, President of the SEG. The Exploration Meeting was well attended by members of the Society and guests. The 1980 Distinguished Lecture program, featuring Dr. Gerald H. F. Gardner, came to Midland with great success. Dr. Gardner’s paper, “New Dimensions in Seismic Exploration” was well received by Society members. Honorary Life Membership was awarded to Mr. Paul Davis for his pioneer work in the Permian Basin”.

“Lest we forget” – a phrase common to many historical incidents applies to events of the times for the oil industry in 1979-1980. The national news media informed everyone that a citizen/labor coalition designated Wednesday, May 17, 1979, as a nationwide day of protest to “Stop Big Oil”! Their major goals were: 1) Re-impose price controls; 2) Establish a taxpayer-owned energy corp.; 3) Appoint a federal prosecutor to enforce public accountability of oil companies; 4) Call for the divestiture of oil companies to increase competition. Naturally, the Permian Basin held a Pro-Oil Rally Day on October 16, 1979.

The Society presented $1000 to the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, Library and Hall of Fame for the continuation of the geophysical exhibits. Mr. Paul Davis, a new Honorary Life Member of PBGS, accepted a position as Executive Trustee with the Museum.

The PBGS also supported the Permian Basin Graduate Center Building fund.

A newly revised, reorganized and computerized velocity survey index was completed by Geo-Search Corp.
