ORIGINAL RECAP: The PBGS HOSTED THE Silver (25th) Anniversary of the Annual Midwestern Exploration Meeting. Theme for the two day event was Research-Refinement-Reserves. Keynote speaker for the event was Carl Savit, President of the SEG. In addition to awarding scholarships, supporting the public library and PBGC, a committee was established to formulate plans, acquire artifacts, catalog inventory and design displays for the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, Library and Hall of Fame.
Yep one more time!! Walt Thomsen was elected President and was transferred to Dallas before he was even appointed. Ted Schmidt moved from First VP to President and Ted Noel was appointed First VP.
This final group had a very busy term since the PBGS was to be host of the Silver (25th) Anniversary of the Midwestern Annual Exploration Meeting. The problem of registration for geophysicists continued, the Permian Basin Museum, Library and Hall of Fame was getting underway and we were again roaming around town trying to find a satisfactory meeting place.
The Doodlebug Open got rained out and had to be rescheduled - much to the chagrin of the many out-of-town players.
Ballots were taken on registration and certification with mixed results. Most were for SEG certification but against state registration.
The scholarship program continued and two students were so honored.
The Permian Basin Museum was formed to work with WTGS representatives, the Abell Foundation and Charles Paramour, Consultant, out of Dallas, who was coordinating the work.
The decision was made to keep the SEG headquarters in Tulsa.
Final big event was the 25th Anniversary Meeting mentioned earlier. Bascom Mitchell painted an original interpretation of the theme Research-Refinement-Reserves for the cover of the booklet. Ernest Angelo, newly elected Mayor of Midland, welcomed guests. A panel discussion was held on certification and registration with panelists Frances Raffalovich (ARCO), Carl Savit (Western) and Craig Ferris (E.V. McCollum). The meeting was held at Theatre Centre with exhibits and lunch held in the Parks and Recreation Building gymnasium. John Daniels will recall a tense call from President Schmidt advising that the exhibitors were too hot and he needed to figure out a way to air condition a gymnasium.
