History of the PBGS: 1969-70
OFFICERS:
PRESIDENT: Robert J. Pervinsek (Union of California)
FIRST VP: S. W. Bill Tift (The Superior Oil Co.)
SECOND VP: Walt Thomsen (Geophysical Service Inc.)
SECRETARY: Arthur Oestmann (Humble Oil & Refining Co.)
TREASURER: Roger Wright (Standard Oil Co. of Texas)
ORIGINAL RECAP: The 16th Annual PBGS Exploration Meeting was held in May. Geophysics-The Challenge of the Seventies was the theme. Two college students were selected to receive the PBGS scholarship awards. The Society continued support of the Permian Basin Graduate Center and the technical library.
The slate of officers listed above came after a series of transfers which started some rumors that to be elected to an office in the PBGS was a sure way to get transferred. This feeling persisted for several years. Bob Specht was initially to be President but got transferred to Alaska, so F. R. OKelly was to be installed as President and Bob Pervinsek was appointed First VP. However, OKelly then got transferred to Calgary so on June 11, 1969, Bob Pervinsek was installed as President, Bill Tift moved to First VP and Walt Thomsen was appointed Second VP. Ed Tomlinson had been elected to Secretary but wound up transferring and Art Oestmann was appointed. This final group managed to remain in town long enough to serve out the term.
Several big debates (and arguments) were held when the University Lands sent a notice of permit increases and invited comments. Increases were ultimately made, although University Lands were still less expensive to work than most of the fee lands.
The Nov. 3, 1969 meeting was Ladies Night when John O. Annexstad, Geophysical Branch, Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, presented a NASA film The Eagle Has Landed. The WTGS was also invited and 385 people were present. The meeting was held in the Convention Center (still Theatre Centre) in Midland.
