ORIGINAL RECAP: “The first locally arranged convention was put into effect in May and was held on Saturday to allow geophysical and geological personnel to attend. Since that time the meeting has been expanded to a two-day affair – 1956 through 1964 – and has been a jointly sponsored program involving the WTGS and the PBGS.” (Note: This is misleading since the first joint meeting took place in 1956 and meetings through 1959 were joint meetings, but in 1960, and subsequent years, the meetings were sponsored by PBGS.)

This year had a big “First” – Midland hosted the first Annual Meeting of the PBGS. A complete list of the program is listed a bit later.

The Society was honored to have Dr. Maurice Ewing visit and lecture to a joint meeting of the WTGS – PBGS. This meeting was held in the Cowden Junior High School auditorium at 600 West Texas, and the subject was “The Atlantic Ocean Basin and Its’ Margins” – it did take a few more years for the industry to get serious about exploring our East coast area.

The Society also assisted a Roswell group who were trying to form their own local section.

The Annual Meting was held on May 17, 1952, at the Scharbauer Hotel – Perry Pickett was current Mayor of Midland and gave the welcoming address. The technical program was as follows:

“Structural Geology of the Permian Basin”, by Jerry Bartley (Consulting Geologist, Midland).

“Exploration Activity in the West Texas – New Mexico Area”, by H. L. Swords (Union of California).

“Seismograph Interpretation as Related to Change in the Sedimentary Section in West Texas – New Mexico”, by John Daly (Consultant) and C. N. Page (Honolulu Oil Corp.).

“The SSC Variable Area Reproducing System”, by R. S. Finn (Seismograph Service Co.)

“Remaining Frontiers in the Improvement of Reflection Seismograph Prospecting”, by R. B. Rice (Phillips Petroleum – Bartlesville, Oklahoma)

“Safe Operation, A Challenge to the Geophysical Industry”, by Bart W. Sorge (United Geophysical – Ca.).

“Elevation Survey by a single Altimeter”, by John Crawford (Conoco)

“Isochron Analysis of Seismic Data”, by E. D. Alcock (National Geophysical Co.)

Needless to say – the convention was a great success – and is still the big event in each year of the PBGS.
