Wm A. McFadden appointed 1st Vice President (Standard Oil Co. of Texas).

ORIGINAL RECAP: “The formation of a Velocity Committee under the able chairmanship of L. H. Johnson which published an index entitled “Wells shot for Velocity”, which has since become a “must” edition for every company operating in the Permian Basin.

Through personal communication, C. Win Payne has advised that he appointed John Daly to Chair the Velocity Committee.

This year was the predecessor of some future years when a company transfer seemed to become directly associated with holding office in the Society. In this case, C. W. Payne was transferred to the Dallas – Ft. Worth area and E. L. Mount became President whereby the Executive Committee appointed Wm. A. McFadden, Jr. to fill his post.

This was also a first year for a PBGS advertisement in the SEG bulletin for an index of wells shot for velocity. This ad appeared in the October, 1951, issue of Geophysics.

In Nov., 1951, the PBGS cooperated with the Dallas Society in presenting the Southwest Regional Meeting in Dallas. Officers of the Society also learned of public relations problems which could be encountered with newspapers and in cutting of speakers when acting as session chairmen. One of the papers presented was “Surface Damages Incurred in Oil and Gas Leasehold Development and Geophysical Operations” by Tom Sealy (lawyer) of Midland. I note this just in case some of the younger people in the industry think that permit or right of way problems are relatively recent. The magnitude of payments has increased as a result of the problem having long roots.

The national AAPG, SEG, SEPM Convention was held in St. Louis in April of 1951. Maybe they should have come to Midland – the Scharbauer Hotel charged $6-$8.00 for a single room with bath and at a November dinner meeting the Midland Country Club the fee was $3.00 and the menu as follows:

Shrimp Cocktail
Filet or Club Steak
Potatoes and Vegetable
Hot Rolls
Drink
Apple or Mince Pie

1951 was a good year in Midland.
