Permian Basin Geophysical Society

History of the PBGS: 1950 – The First Year

By January 17, 1950, there were 96 paid members in the Society and on Feb., 8, 1950, a letter was received from the SEG noting that Executive Order #229 accepted the PBGS as a Local Section of the SEG – effective Jan. 30, 1950 (date of the last approving signature). The Society attracted much interest and membership had grown to 185 by February of 1950.

At his time there were about 90 seismic crews in the Permian Basin area of Texas and New Mexico and each crew had 10 to 12 men. Contracting geophysical companies with offices in Midland were: Advanced Exploration Co., National Geophysical Co., Pan American Geophysical Co., Portable Seismograph Co., Rayflex Exploration Co., Reed Magnetic Surveys, Reliable Geophysical Co., Republic Exploration Co., Seismic Explorations Inc., Seismograph Service Corp., Southern Geophysical, United Geophysical and Western Geophysical Co. This information is based on the 1950 issue of the Midland Telephone Directory.

Regular meetings were held throughout the year when papers were presented or films were shown. Other actions included the election of John A. Cathey as the Society representative to the national SEG convention, and the naming of several PBGS Honorary Members: E. D. Alcock (V. Pres. National Geophysical), Ed Gideon, Neal Clayton and G. H. Westby. It is also noted that G. H. Westby donated an amplifier system to the PBGS – could it be the same one we used until just recently?

Election of officers was held on Nov. 10, 1950 – but they will be listed with 1951.
