Permian Basin Geophysical Society

History of the PBGS

The Permian Basin Geophysical Society: An Historical Narrative is presented in this published format to our members to honor the 75th Anniversary of the existence of our parent society, the Society of Exploration Geophysics. Congratulations to you all for 55 years of providing a supportive, fun and often educational environment for Permian Basin doodlebuggers.

Ted Schmidt’s work on the History this past year began with a chat after a luncheon meeting last year. The Board knew of his PBGS Historical Narrative that documented the formation of our Society in 1949 through the difficult years of 1986-87. A paper copy resided in our PBGS files. Several years ago we began to publish pieces of the History in the PBGS Newsletter, but the scope of Ted’s work couldn’t really be captured in such a format. Ted brings both humor and dedication to comprehensive detail to the 1987-2005 Supplement, just as he did in the earlier History. In order to bring this document up-to-date, Ted pored through dusty files, retrieving information long buried in former Board members files or residing in a file cupboard at the WTGS office. He interviewed many of our members and patiently waited for the current Board to yield up their digital files. With the help of his wife Sue, Ted reformatted the text to an updated MS Word format that we could take to the publishers. Our society is extremely grateful to Ted for his work and we are proud to provide you, our membership, with not only a physical memento of this year’s anniversaries, but also a document that reflects a part of your professional career in the doodlebuggin’ business.

You’ll find names of people and companies that you may not have thought of for some years, marvel at the changes in our industry, and remark on how we’ve survived and indeed thrived. You’ll find some interesting stories. You may be surprised to find your memory jostled and recall another old story. Of course, our history doesn’t end here; it is ongoing and you are a part of it. We welcome your interest and input and ask that you join with us in celebrating our 55 years of existence along with the 75 years of SEG life!
